Project details: New build extension in Fittleworth Sandstone.
Location: Arundel, West Sussex |
Arundel Castle GatehousePHASE 1- completed November 2009 This project was to supply and fix Fittleworth sandstone made into mullions, jambs, cills, doorways, arches, quoins, string course and crenulations to a new build extension. The Fittleworth sandstone is a mix of buff and grey with an open texture which tends to give a soft edge and weathered look. It is from the same geographic seam as the much wider used Midhurst sandstone and is only slightly lighter in colour. We have been able to make the mullions up to 900mm high on bed. In all some 18 tons of sandstone were sawn in the course of this project from raw block. The stones were profiled by CNC saws and then finished by hand leaving the chisel mark to match the original. The weatherings are made of Wood Kirk grey York sandstone - a harder stone that will weather better. PHASE 2-April 2010-We are now progressing with a further phase of work at Arundel Estates using Fittleworth sandstone again. This is the restoration of chimneys stacks and windows as well as a new doorway on an Estate Lodge. |
